Towards Ubiquitous Internet

After the success of a Workshop on WiMAX in 2005 (, Institute for Telecommunications (IT) is organizing the Workshop Mobile WiMAX – Towards Ubiquitous Internet on the 27th of September 2007, at ISCTE - Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa, Av. Das Forças Armadas, Lisbon.

The nowadays context of frequency spectrum management in Europe, as well as the need for making broadband access flexible for people, creates opportunities for the entrance of new operators, and the diversification of the offer of innovative access technologies.

As WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) allows for supporting mobile broadband Internet services in outdoor environments (and even in indoor ones, for the lowest frequency bands) with high coverage ranges and user mobility support, the theme of the Workshop appears in a phase when the mobile communications sector will be in the centre of attention again.

From the final programme, one draws attention to speakers from Academia, as Prof. Hamid Aghvami from King’s College London, from manufacturers, as Dr. Mika Grundstrom from Nokia, from operators and their research Laboratories, and also from research projects of Institute for Telecommunications, as MobileMAN (Mobile IP for Broadband Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks, whose research team involves researchers from IT - Lisbon pole, IT - Covilhã Laboratory, and IT - ISCTE delegation.)

The Workshop will be sponsored by ISCTE, Ordem dos Engenheiros (Colégio de Engenharia Electrotécnica and Especialização de Telecomunicações), IEEE (Portugal Section and VTS Portugal Chapter), APDC, Academia de Ciências - Instituto de Altos Estudos, Academia de Engenharia, Alcatel Lucent, Advanced Resources, ANACOM, APDC, CGD, FCCN, FCT, IST and UBI, among others.

This event occurs in the context of the Portuguese Presidency of European Union (Ciência 2007 UE).

Registration can be performed by using the registration form and sending it via e-mail, fax or mail.
